New Delhi: It was the most humiliating defeat India have faced under the leadership of Anil Kumble and the skipper does not have too many kind words for his team. After India were thumped by an innings and 239 runs in the first Test in Colombo, the third biggest loss in their history of Test cricket, Kumble has lashed out at his wards for the lack of 'attitude and character.'

"People were raising questions about us not playing more warm-up matches before the Test series and our preparation but that was not the problem. What is crucial is attitude and character and we didn't show that in this Test match," Kumble wrote in his column for the Hindustan Times.

Kumble also endorsed that it was perhaps the worst possible start that his team could get off to in the Sri Lankan tour.

"It was a Test match to forget for us and definitely not the kind of start you look for getting into a series," added Kumble.

And the skipper did not mince words when it came to stating the reasons behind India's heaviest loss to Sri Lanka.

"The Sri Lankans bowled well but the way we batted was disappointing. Four of Sri Lanka's batsmen scored centuries and in contrast we had just one fifty from two innings. This clearly does not reflect quality we have in the batting line-up and the same goes for the bowling.
