New Delhi: Exactly a year ago, a young and brash Indian team, players mostly from small towns, announced their arrival with the win in the Twenty20 World Championships in South Africa. From Yuvraj Singh's six sixes to the new found athleticism of our fielders, the T20 World Cup was a spectacle, making reputations and destroying some.
At the first World Cup of the radically shortened version of the game, it was fast and it was furious. And Dhoni and his men stormed the stage minus the 'Big three'. The Indian fans were still moaning the loss in the World Cup in the West Indies and some uncharitably called Dhoni's team that went to South Africa a 'B-grade team.' But all that changed. Players many of us hadn't even heard of became overnight heroes.
Here is September 24, 2007 all over again:
It was India versus Pakistan in a World Cup final, and the run chase was nothing short of a Bollywood flick. Misbah-ul-Haq was at the crease as Joginder Sharma ran in with six runs required from four balls.
What followed was India's biggest prize as a cricketing powerhouse.
"We all believed that we will do it and that's what matters. If you believe you can do it and keep reminding yourself to do it, most of the times it will happen," said the composed captain after achieving the unthinkable.
The celebrations continued till the early hours of Wednesday morning. An inexperienced side, to which no one even gave an outside chance, outshone everyone else to become the toast of a cricket-hungry nation.
Even batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar bowed down to the greatness achieved by this team. "World champions is something where you have all the eleven players contributing. It's wonderful to see that and I'm extremely proud as an Indian that the team has been able to achieve this and it will be talked about for years to come."
The old guard of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly had opted out for this 'young' formant. Dhoni was made captain of an inexperienced side without any expectations. But that turned out to be a boon for the historic win.
