Mumbai: Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan believes though Australia has the edge over India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but their complete lack of quality spin could pose serious challenges in front of the Aussies against India. He spoke to CNN-IBN's Roma Khanna.
CNN-IBN: In India there is a huge debate going on about the future of our seniors. What do you feel is the best way to deal with such an issue?
Muttiah Muralitharan: I think it's a personal issue of the players and how fit are they and how they are performing. So I don't think there is an issue at all. It is just being created by the media.
I think the players should be given the privacy to decide how and when to retire. Individual players.
Roma Khanna: Some say Sachin was not the player he was five years ago. But your game has not changed. You are the same bowler. How does a player who has been there for so long deal with that kind of pressure.
Muttiah Muralitharan: I don't think there is any additional pressure for any player. They have played the game for the last 15-16 years. So there is no pressure on him till he puts the pressure on himself. The rest is created by the outsiders.
Roma Khanna: Which team do you think has the edge in the India-Australia series with three Tests to go?
Muttiah Muralitharan: I saw a little bit of the Bangalore Test. In that Australia had the edge but still I worry about the Australians because they lack in their spin department. If you want to win in India, you need a quality spinner. Those days they had Warne and that's why they won the series. Without Warne it will be tough for Australia but you never know, cricket is a funny game.
