The 88 runs partnership between Tendulkar and Ganguly ensured that India clinched their seventh victory against Pakistan on Indian soil and also their seventh consecutive win at the Kotla. Though Ganguly provided Akhtar with his fourth wicket of the innings, Tendulkar remained not out on 56.

Akhtar rocked the Indian top order but Tendulkar and Ganguly steadied the chase with a 78 run partnership for the fourth wicket.
