Ajantha Mendis won the Man of the Match award for his 6 wickets for 13 runs today.
Sri Lanka are the deserved victors of the Asia Cup 2008. They made the 'famed' Indian batting order look like a pack of tail-enders owing largely to the guile of their new-found spin-wizard Ajantha Mendis. This is the fourth time that Sri laka have lifted the Asia Cup. They win by 100 runs which bangs a nail in the coffin for the Indian side who have only won 2 finals out of the 22 they have reached in the last few years.
India seem to have made it a habit of reaching finals and losing them. Today was another one as they lost to Sri Lanka by 100 runs. They played superbly throughout the Asia Cup but one Sri Lankan bowler was all it took to reduce the Indian batting line-up to shreds. Ajantha Mendis had his name pasted all over the Indian scorecard. He picked up his career-best figures of 6 wickets for 13 runs as he kept sending Indian batsmen to the pavillion one after the other. Chasing 273 runs to wins, India believed they stood a chance but clearly the match belonged to Ajantha Mendis who proves that he is spinner that's here to stay for a very very long time. India will vouch for that.

It was an ambitious move by Dhoni to play with only four regular bowlers and bowl first after winning the toss. Ishant Sharma and co were given a task to restrict Lanka under or just around 300. The Indian bowlers started off well claiming the top order quickly and crippling the Islanders at 66-4. But the Matara Mauler with nerves of steel showed his class. Despite his partners deserting him, he rose to the ocassion and led a sensational counter attack which included 26 runs in an over of RP Singh. The left hander brought up his 6th Asia Cup century and 27th ODI ton to lead a brilliant fightback. Sharing a superb 100 run partnership with Dilshan, the duo challenged the Indians. However, Jayasuriya got out at a crucial time (35.3 overs) which dashed the Lankan hopes of scoring 300.
The Indian spinnersled by Pragyan Ojha bowled remarkably well today and brought the run rate down after the initial onslaught by Sri Lanka. Lankan skipper Jayawardena now will have to come up with smart strategy to restrict India from scoring 274on this flat wicket. Sri Lanka have never won the Asia Cup when its held outside Sri Lanka and today they need to come up with something special to stop this script from being repated.
