Sri Lanka bowed out of the CB Series in style, trumping Australia by 13 runs in their final game despite wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist's scintillating 83 from only 50 balls.
Set a modest 222 to chase, Australia were hoping for smooth sailing to keep their winning momentum in place before taking on India in a best of three final.
The Australian gloveman, who was playing his last match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground before he hangs up his boots at the end of the Australian summer, celebrated his return to form in characteristic fashion, hammering 12 fours and two sixes en route to a 100-run partnership along with makeshift opener James Hopes.
To Australia's dismay, the hosts were bowled out 13 runs short despite a seven-an-over start, losing the advantage handed to them by the explosive left-hander, who bowed out of the MCG to a standing ovation.
